From the very ground that grows your favorite Okanagan fruit and produce comes Solar Nest Arts' authentic replica pottery. The unique feature of our pottery wares (including our new low fire cone 03 stoneware) is the exclusive use of our local clay for authentic ancient near eastern forms with ancient language inscriptions. Since the 1950s when my grandfather began orcharding in Kelowna, the heavy clay on our property bore a reputation for defying machinery, spade, and door mat alike. However, my relationship with this life-long adversary changed after a 2009 conversation over the pottery wheel. My process begins with hand washing, straining, and mixing several times, after which the clay is dried, pugged and bagged. It takes 3-4 weeks to produce bags of clay that will then require several more months to cure before being ready to throw.
My choice of vessel forms (decanters, ring flasks, pilgrim flasks, plates, platters, chalices, store jars etc.) are based upon standard Bronze and Iron Age forms found in excavatons throughout the Middle East. My choice of inscribed text and script is taken from the tradition of the Keteph Hinnom Silver Scrolls, excavated in Jerusalem in 1978. These tiny 6th century B.C. silver amulets are inscribed with the ancient Hebrew invocation echoed in the Biblical passage in Numbers 6:24-26.
